Bears power to hat-trick in league second round

Stratford Editorial 8th Feb, 2019   0

WARWICKSHIRE Bears women’s team produced a fantastic performance to win three matches out of three in the second round of the BWB Women’s League Division Three in Nottingham.

The Bears opened the two-day tournament with a 27-22 win against Jaguars and then swept aside Scottish Warriors 40-6 before a 43-20 victory against South Wales Dragons.

Coach Dan Smith hailed “a fantastic performance from the girls.”

“With the team including three new players together with players back from injuries, everyone came together and they all gave 100 per cent,” he said

“I’m really proud of each of them. We are already looking forward to the next round in April.”

With inspirational captain Aimee Lane back for this weekend games, the Bears faced a spirited Jaguars team in their first match. As the game progressed they slowly were able to find some cohesion in their defence and with talented junior Ellan Fraser and Fran Smith were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over to finish on top of a tight finish for a 27-22 win.

On Sunday, the Bears begin against Scottish Warriors, who are making their league debut this season and featured a string of new players in their squad.

The Bears played the game in a fantastic spirit, and recognising the inexperience of the opposition, the Bears coach allowed the Warriors to play limiting any pressure on defence whilst allowing the Bears to attack freely when in possession. At the end of the contest the opposition coach thanked the Bears for the fantastic spirit in which they played the game which ended 40-6 to the Bears.

The second fixture of the day was a trickier game on paper for the Bears and the Dragons took an early six-point lead. Bears coach Smith called a time out and settled the team back to a strong defence.

With Jess Whyte and Smith playing tremendously together at both ends of the court and young Fraser hitting her shots, the Bears were able to pull in front. Thanks to the steadying influence of captain Lane, and with Michelle Quested finding her shooting range, the lead continued to grow to finish 43-20.

The Bears are next in action when Bears 2 travel to Aylesbury to take on the Aces on Sunday (February 2010).

The Bears are still looking for a sponsor for the team and also always looking to recruit new members. For more details, contact Bears at [email protected] or call 07946518354.
