WARWICKSHIRE Bears 2nds had to settle for fourth place after suffering two defeats at the British Wheelchair Basketball League Division Three national play-offs at Worcester on Saturday.

In their semi-final, the Bears endured a heavy 65-25 loss to Cumbria (CWSC) Panthers 2nds, who went on to take the title.

From the opening tip-off, the Bears were in trouble against a fast, talented Panthers side who were able to cut through a weakened Bears team.

The Bears fought valiantly to try and stay within touching distance, but were unable to against the eventual champions.

Defeat put the Bears into Sunday’s bronze medal match against Wakefield Whirlwinds who claimed a thrilling 50-48 victory.

The lead changed hands throughout the contest before the Whirlwinds took a decisive advantage towards the end of the last quarter and were able to hold on.

Bears head coach Tom Masterson reflected: “It has been a disappointing end to such a marvellous season but I’m still immensely proud of how well the team has done all season.

“This weekend has hopefully shown we need to start the hard work straight away to get ready for next season and the second division.”

The Bears will be holding training sessions over the summer and are looking to recruit for next season’s games in Division One and Two, as well as for their Women’s League Division Two side.

Junior players are also welcomed as the club bid to enter a team in junior leagues. For more details call Masterson on 07946 518354.
