PAULA Williams starred for Stratford-upon-Avon Athletic Club competing at the British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF) Championships.

The Championships took place at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London with 580 athletes taking part across 135 different events.

Williams was one of four Stratford athletes who made the journey South along with David Jones, Mark Illingworth and Dave Battersby.

The W50 athlete won gold in the 60-metre hurdles in a personal best (PB) time of 9.62 seconds – breaking the previous British record set in 2008.

And Williams also won gold in the W50 shot put with a throw of 13.17 metres before winning her 60-metre heat and then the final in a season’s best time of 8.24 seconds – her fastest run since 2018.

M70 athlete Jones is in the final year of his age category and exceeded his own expectations to win double bronze.

Jones was promoted to third place in the 800m after the runner in front of him was disqualified for breaking too early.

And Jones then won 1,500m bronze with a well-executed run, sitting on the shoulder of the third-placed runner before accelerating off the final bend to claim his second medal of the Championships.

Multi-event athlete Illingworth finished in a time of 31.32 seconds in his 200m race just 0.15 secs outside of a place in the final.

And he set a new PB of 9.05 secs in his 60-metre heat, finishing 0.04 secs outside of the qualifying time for the final although Illingworth is now in the UK top-10 in the M65 age category.

Lastly, Battersby took part in the highly competitive M45 400m race, his first indoor 400m for almost a year, but was unable to qualify for the final with a time of 58.84 seconds in his heat.
