STRATFORD-upon-Avon Athletic Club athletes helped Warwickshire achieve a third-place finish in the under-15 boys event at the Sportshall UK National Final.

The final took place at Fenton Manor in Stoke-on-Trent with six under-15 Stratford athletes representing Warwickshire along with Jacob Vural from Rugby and Northampton AC and Will Hovell as the non-scoring reserve.

And the squad endured mixed fortunes in their individual events but held their own against strong competition to secure an impressive third-placed finish overall with 1,189 points.

Warwickshire finished behind winners Surrey (1,370 points) and runners-up Buckinghamshire (1,230 points).

The points came from Will Marriott (10th, 255 points), Alex Wood (14th, 249 points), Jacob Vural (16th, 248 points), Sam McKenzie (25th, 227 points), Toby Thomas (30th, 213 points) and Matteo Martinengo (32nd, 211 points).

Marriott threw a personal best (PB) distance of 8.07m in the shot put while Wood ran a stunning four-lap race to win gold before partnering the former to take silver in a tactical eight-lap race.

And Warwickshire won bronze in the 4×2 lap relay as Vural held his own in leg one before Thomas and Martinengo put the county in medal contention and McKenzie clinched third by the thickness of a vest on the line in the last leg.
