Threat of devolution looms over new Stratford District Council cabinet

A NEW cabinet has been appointed at Stratford District Council amid the uncertainty of devolution.

Coun Susan Juned remains leader of the Liberal Democrat-run administration for a second year.

She said the council remained committed to its residents, especially during the challenges ahead, including the uncertainty surrounding local government organisation – which could see the abolishment of district councils.

Coun Juned continued: ““The uncertainty surrounding local government re-organisation poses a challenge, but we are committed to ensuring that residents continue to receive high-quality services in the coming years. Resilience to financial cuts and challenges is key. Our ambition is for this district council to be recognised as a leader in supporting residents, local businesses, protecting the environment, addressing climate change, and driving sustainable innovation in services for the future.”

Coun George Cowcher is deputy leader and planning and economic development portfolio holder, Coun Natalie Gist is law and governance portfolio holder, Coun Lorraine Grocott environment and neighbourhood services portfolio holder and

Coun David Curtis resources portfolio holder. The housing and customer services portfolio is in the hands of Coun Liz Coles and Coun Louis Adam is in charge of projects and communications.

Coun Kate Rolfe is chairman and Coun Mike Rice, vice-chairman.

Out-going chair Coun Jenny Fradgley handed over the chain of office to Coun Rolfe at SDC’s annual meeting on Wednesday May 14.

During her term of office Coun Fradgley nominated Citizens Advice, Air Ambulance Warwickshire and Parkinson’s as her charities and raised a total of £3,000 to be split between them.

This time, Coun Rolfe will be supporting a CIC, a community interest company during her term of office and has chosen Stratford’s Eco Workshop CIC, who provide purposeful work activities for adults with learning disability and autism.

Her husband Mike will be her consort during her term of office and Rev Dr Paul Edmondson will be her chaplin.

Coun Rolfe added: “It is truly a huge honour to be elected to the role of chair of the district council. I am proud and excited to represent the district council and look forward to visiting and accepting as many invitations as possible and promoting our wonderful district. It is a responsibility I hold with gratitude and determination.”
