Talk to lift the lid on Roman Alcester

THE LID is being lifted on Roman life in Alcester.

Warwickshire Local History Society’s next evening talk takes place on Tuesday February 8 at Aylesford Primary School in Warwick and will see Alan Godfrey, chair of Alcester and District Local History Society, discuss“Life in Roman Alcester”.

Alcester became a small Roman town, dating from the Roman invasion of AD 46 when a fort was built on a hilltop to the south of the town, to defend the river crossing.

Two Roman roads crossed in Alcester – the Icknield Street running north to south connecting Lichfield with Cirencester, and the Salt Way linking Droitwich with the Fosse Way.

The town was later protected by walls and gates, and the earlier fort was abandoned.

The talk will start at 7.30 pm with tea and coffee served from 7pm.

There is no need to book. Non members and donations are welcome.
