THE SHAKESPEARE Birthplace Trust is throwing open the gates to the garden of Hall’s Croft in Stratford for a special day of environmentally friendly fun.

The Sustainable Shakespeare Community Fun Day, this Saturday (September 24), aims to teach families how to look after the nature in their own back gardens, with a Shakespearean twist.

A paw print trail will help participants discover more about Shakespeare’s love of nature and how it influenced his work. And there will also be a host of hands-on sessions including making bird feeders.

Forest of Hearts will be showing how to make bug hotels and there will be sustainable craft activities including making an Autumn Crown fit for a Shakespearean monarch.

Andrew Anderson, Environmental Health and Safety Officer at The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said: “Sustainability is an incredibly important subject but it doesn’t mean that it can’t be discussed in such a way that isn’t engaging and fun.

“In the same way that, as a trust, we celebrate Shakespeare in all things, we also have an environmental pledge to be carbon-neutral by 2030 and this also means educating and inspiring our audiences to join us in this commitment.”

He added: “As in all things, it is the man himself that says it best – ‘One touch of nature makes the whole world kin’ and that’s what we want to inspire during our family day. Everyone doing their part to support the delicate biodiversity in our local area will, in turn, support the wider eco-system.”

The Sustainable Shakespeare Community Fun Day runs from 10am to 4pm and entry is free.

The event comes as part of The Great Big Green Week, a national campaign running from Saturday (September 24) to Sunday October 2.

More events will be taking place across Stratford during the week including Stratford Town Trust’s riverside walk, a visit to a solar farm, a meeting of the Wheely Wonderful Ladies Bike Group at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, a moth count at St James’ Church in Alveston and a Rubbish Friends litter pick starting at Foundation House.
