STRATFORD Town’s match with Bromsgrove Sporting on Bank Holiday Monday has been postponed following the death of Cody Fisher.
Two men have been charged with the murder of 23-year-old Cody who was fatally stabbed at a nightclub in Birmingham on Boxing Day.
Kami Carpenter, aged 21, and Remy Gordon, aged 22, have been charged with murder and affray.
The pair from Birmingham have been remanded into custody to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday January 2.
A 22-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of 23-year-old Cody’s murder has been released on bail while our enquiries continue.
The Southern League meeting with Bromsgrove Sporting, for who Cody also previously played for, was postponed following a request from Stratford Town to the league – as a mark of respect for Cody’s family and friends and in recognition of the “significant emotions” within the club itself.
A statement on the Southern League’s website said: “The cruel and savage events of Boxing Day that resulted in the fatal stabbing of Stratford Town’s Cody Fisher has brought hurt and pain to so many.
“Stratford Town advising the league that players, management, staff and supporters are struggling to overcome the incident and request time to seek professional help for those that need it and as such, as a club, are in no fit state to fulfil the fixture.
“The league and its board sends its best wishes to all those affected, hoping that the pain begins to heal.”
Cody was stabbed on the dance floor of the Crane nightclub in Digbeth, and the venue has since had its licence suspended.
Speaking following the charging of the two men, Det Ch Insp Ian Ingram, from West Midlands Police homicide unit, said: “This is a significant development in our investigation as we seek to get justice for Cody, his family and friends.
“We’ve received fantastic support from the public who’ve really helped us in our enquiries so far.
“However, we’re still really keen to hear from anyone with information who has not already spoken to us. Every piece of information helps our investigation.
Four other people arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released on bail as investigations continue.
Stratford Town FC posted a tribute on its website which read: “Our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of Cody Fisher.
“Our thoughts are with the you at this very difficult time.
“Cody made 54 appearance for The Bards and having started with the club in 2018.”
Keen footballer Mr Fisher also played left-back for a number of other non league sides in the midlands. Injury had prevented him turning out for Stratford this season.
