Stratford prep school youngsters make bird boxes with salvaged wood

GREEN-minded youngsters at Stratford Preparatory School have been building bird boxes using recycled wood from their playground.

They used wood salvaged from old, much loved playground equipment that was being demolished as part of an upgrade to the school’s outdoor facilities.

The project was made possible through a collaboration with MHGraphics, a Stratford-based business that funded additional materials needed for the bird box construction.

MHGraphics also arranged for one of their clients, an experienced woodworker, to work with the children. Together, they helped the pupils create the bird boxes while also teaching them about sustainability, recycling, and the importance of protecting local wildlife.

MHGraphics even laser engraved each bird box with the school crest to add an extra special, personal touch.

Teacher Lucie Jones said: “The children absolutely loved the hands-on experience of turning old timber into something new and purposeful. It was a fantastic way to teach the pupils about the environment, nature, and the role they can play in making a positive impact.

“The fact that the wood came from the playground itself added an extra layer of connection to the project. Not only did we recycle the materials, but we also created something that will help protect garden birds and support local biodiversity.”

The children each took a bird box home with them and there were even a few spare ones which are now installed in the school’s grounds, where they will provide homes for various species of birds.
