MP MANUELA Perteghella is calling for a parliamentary vote on the UK-US trade deal.
The UK has became the first nation to sign a historic trade deal with the USA in Donald Trump’s second term as president.
Tariffs on UK steel and aluminium have been removed, and tariffs faced by the automotive industry have also been revised to 10 per cent for the first 100,000 cars exported to the US. But Stratford MP, Dr Perteghella remains concerned that the deal does not remove all tariffs.
She cites that while full details of the agreement have not yet been published, ongoing negotiations still cover major issues such as online safety protections for children, taxation of US tech giants, and potential American influence over the NHS.
She is calling on the government to guarantee a parliamentary vote on the agreement, so as not to deny MPs and their constituents any say over the deal.
She continued: “The devil will be in the detail when it comes to this trade deal, especially when working with someone as erratic and unreliable as Donald Trump.
“What we do know is that many of Trump’s damaging tariffs are still in place and continue to hurt businesses and hit people’s pay packets right here in Stratford.
“My constituents deserve clarity. The government must publish the full details of this agreement without delay. By refusing to commit to a vote in parliament, they are denying local people their democratic voice – and that’s simply unacceptable.
“I will continue to scrutinise this deal and speak up for the people of Stratford, who remain rightly concerned about vital issues – whether it’s our farmers being undercut, online safety laws being watered down, or US tech giants dodging fair taxation.
“Given Trump’s track record of tearing up agreements on a whim, this government must not hand him the pen without first letting parliament have a say.”
