STRATFORD District Council is calling on the Government to rethink key policies.

The Liberal Democrat led council voted by a large majority to call on the Labour Government to back track on several issues it says are important to district residents.

It is pressing for an urgent review by the government of the decision to means test the

Winter Fuel Payment in order to protect vulnerable pensioners from being cold this winter.

SDC also voted for council leader Susan Juned to write to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed to demand an immediate reversal to the Family Farm Tax, after councillors expressed concerns the effect it would have on family farms in south Warwickshire.

The council also called for fixing the UK’s relationship with the EU to reverse the economic

damage caused to local farms.

And councillors also raised concerns about the increase to the bus fare cap to £3 and

called for the decision to be reversed to avoid the disproportionate effect on the least well off.

which risks suppressing bus usage and putting ‘uneconomic’ routes at risk.

The council also voted to support further reports on what will be required for the

reinstatement of a single track railway line providing a direct connection from Stratford station to destinations to the south west, Oxford and Reading.

Coun Juned said: “The Labour Government was elected on a promise of change, but so far it has been a case of no change with our rural economy and household finances under pressure much as they were under the Conservatives.”
