Stratford canal quarter regeneration project earns green credentials

THE AMBITIOUS project to regenerate Stratford’s canal quarter is heating up.

The Canal Quarter Regeneration Zone project is set to earn its green credentials thanks to a partnership between Stratford District Council and Carbon Trust Advisory Ltd.

The contractor will assist SDC on preparing a plan for a Low Carbon District Heating Network scheme for the regeneration project.

Work will begin later this year and the District Heating Network could supply heat to businesses and houses across an area of 27 hectares within the CQRZ, immediately northwest of the town centre.

The Canal Quarter is composed of land next to the Stratford Canal at Western Road, Wharf Road, Timothy’s Bridge Road and Masons Road.

The project to regenerate the area was given the go-ahead in 2018.

Up to 650 new homes, 9,000 square metres of employment retail and leisure premises, a linear park alongside the canal and multi-purpose community facility, will be built on the land formerly occupied by industrial and commercial buildings.

The District Heat Network will contribute towards local and national carbon reduction targets, including delivering cheaper energy for residents and businesses alike.

Bulldozers moved onto the site earlier this year to demolish the existing buildings and work is set to be completed in 2030.

SDC economic spokesperson Coun George Cowcher said: “This project is a ground-breaking step forward in our aim to reach zero carbon, developing more sustainable systems to deliver heating and energy to our residents and businesses.”
