Revamped Greig Leisure Centre to open its doors

Stratford Editorial 4th Aug, 2020   0

THE GREIG Leisure Centre is set to open its doors.

Stratford District Council acquired the centre in Alcester from the Greig Trustees in January and have since paid for a number of improvements.

These include a new outdoor floodlit 3G football pitch, renovations to the gym, dance studio and sports hall and refurbished changing areas.

Council chiefs took possession of the neglected site – which includes a memorial hall and leisure centre – following a lengthy legal battle with the former Greig Trustees

The memorial hall closed in 2013 after proving ‘financially unviable’ and residents raised a petition calling for the trustees to hand ownership to the council so it could be re-opened for community use.

The leisure centre will be run by Everyone Active, which manages other council-owned leisure centres in the district.

District council community spokeswoman, Coun Sarah Whalley-Hoggins said: “The council is committed to providing first class sport and leisure facilities for everyone to enjoy and was committed to investing in the leisure facilities at the Greig.

“We are, with our contractor Everyone Active, delighted to be able to deliver quality leisure facilities and services at the Greig, encouraging more people to live healthier and active lifestyles, which the residents of Alcester and the surrounding villages will benefit from.”
