Plan in place to protect wildlife in Stratford district

THE GREEN light has been given to a plan to protect wildlife and address the climate crisis in the district.

Stratford District Council has approved a new Climate and Nature Recovery Strategy, which provides an overview of what the council’s priorities are when tackling climate and ecological issues.

The strategy is supported by an annual delivery plan. This sets out the specific actions SDC will take over the next year to ensure it remains on track to achieve its sustainability ambitions.

SDC’s leader Coun Susan Juned said: ‘We need to do more to protect our wildlife and address the climate crisis. Addressing the two together ensures that we can minimise the risks for the future. We must leave the district in a better state for our children and grandchildren by doing all that we can, while we can. We will work with our partners, stakeholders and communities to deliver the changes needed.”

In 2019, SDC declared a climate emergency. Since then the wheels have been in motion to make the district a greener place.

Achievements so far have included the installation of 26 EV charge points in SDC’s car parks, the launch of an e-cargo fleet, the introduction of the council’s new 123+ waste collection service – enabling food waste collected in the district to be used to generate low carbon heat – the designation of an area of land as a nature reserve, the planting of over 7,000 trees and the installation of solar panels on Stratford Leisure Centre.
