On your bike - Warwickshire residents encouraged to join Bike Month Challenge

GET on your bike to feel better, help the environment and save money – that is the springtime message to Warwickshire residents.

Throughout May, Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is supporting Love to Ride’s Bike Month Challenge, which aims to get businesses, communities and individuals to take up cycling for work, health and leisure.

The council is emphasising the benefits to cycling, including reducing fuel costs, improving physical and mental wellbeing, and benefiting the environment.

And residents who use the Love to Ride app to log their bike rides and give feedback on cycle routes during May could be in with a chance to win prizes, including cash.

WCC is also offering support to participating businesses, including support and consultation to help them draft their own Active Travel Plans.

The council can also arrange for a variety of free active travel events such as bike maintenance sessions, security marking, training sessions and route planning.

WCC’s transport spokesman Coun Jan Matecki said: “The benefits of active travel, particularly travelling by bike, are huge, both for the individual and for our wider environment.

“For residents looking to reduce vehicle costs for fuel and maintenance, improve physical and mental wellbeing while also benefiting the environment, there is no better time than now to get on those bikes.

“It’s often the short journeys – less than five miles – which have the greatest negative impact, both on the environment and on finances. However, these are also the easiest ones to replace with a cycling alternative, whether it be for the school pick-up, the commute to work or to pop into town for shopping and socialising.”
