New medical training chair to bring NHS system from “dial up” to modern era

Stratford Editorial 6th Apr, 2026   0

THE NHS’s ‘creaking and outdated’ medical training system is set to be updated as part of a new scheme, writes Chinaza Eke.

Prof Dame Jane Dacre has been appointed by NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care to lead a team to implement the Medical Education and Training Review.

It is aimed at understanding current challenges and identifying key areas of improvement within medical training.

Dame Jane’s team will work with  doctors, the General Medical Council, Medical Schools Council, Royal Colleges and other bodies to implement the changes and ensure the voices of other clinical professionals, patients and managers are heard.

Dame Jane said medical education and training had not kept up with the times and radical change was needed so patients’ needs and treatments were better-met by the healthcare system.

“We want to support all resident doctors to feel valued and to aspire to excellence.

“To make the NHS fit for the future, we need to reshape how we train doctors who are key to the future of the NHS and we need to start now.”

The four-nation implementation is sponsored by Prof Sir Chris Witty, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health and Social Care, and Prof Meghana Pandit, National Medical Director at NHS England.
