New grants scheme will commemorate VE and VJ Days in Stratford district

A GRANT programme to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Days has been launched in the district.

The new £350,000 Community Grant Scheme, given the seal of approval by Stratford District Council’s Cabinet this week, is aimed at transforming community spaces into living memorials that honour the sacrifice and spirit of past generations. It will also promote unity, remembrance, and community cohesion.

Town and parish councils, registered charities, PTAs, and community interest companies can apply for small grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 or large grants of between £20,001 and £100,000.

Project types can include structural repairs, accessibility improvements, facility upgrades, outdoor space enhancements, and new community asset creation.

SDC’s customer services spokesperson Coun Liz Coles said: “This scheme is a powerful opportunity to invest in the heart of our communities, ensuring that vital spaces remain accessible, inclusive, and resilient for future generations. It’s also a meaningful way to honour the legacy of those who served during world war two.”

The council will host workshops to guide potential applicants through the process, with support from Warwickshire CAVA and other partners. Projects will be assessed by a dedicated panel using a robust scoring system that prioritises community impact, deliverability and location of the project.
