New chapter begins at historic south Warwickshire estate

Ian Hughes 3rd Mar, 2026   0

A NEW chapter is beginning in the long history of a south Warwickshire country estate.

Coughton Court reopens this weekend to the public with the Throckmorton family resuming the day-to-day running of the estate near Alcester.

In 2005, a 15-year management agreement was put in place, and the National Trust took on the operational running of the property. This agreement was extended on a rolling yearly basis to provide more time to work through future arrangements, as well as accommodating a pause during the pandemic.

While the Throckmorton family will be resuming the management, the National Trust will continue to care for and preserve the property.

The family has unveiled a new vision for the country estate following the period of National Trust stewardship.

Descendants of Sir Robert Throckmorton who built the house in 1409, Magnus and Imogen Birch Throckmorton have ambitious plans.

The young couple, who already call Coughton Court home with their children Isabella and Hector, want to showcase the estate’s heritage, while also making it a hub of the community.

At its heart, the stableyard is home to a new cafe serving freshly grown and local produce, an independent shop showcasing local products, and an exhibition space for hosting events, workshops and school visits.

A new programme of events will include seasonal favourites such as Easter egg hunts and Halloween pumpkin races, along with pizza evenings and foodie feasts.

Keen to support local creatives and businesses, Coughton Court will also host a programme of workshops and classes led by local groups and creatives, spanning both indoor and outdoor activities. From yoga in the orchard and painting workshops, to supper clubs, the family are keen to strengthen the estate’s ties to the local community.

Magnus said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming visitors back to Coughton Court. It’s a privilege to be continuing our family’s stewardship of this remarkable place, and to share its fantastic history and beauty with the public. Coughton is a place for everyone, whatever their age, to explore and enjoy with plenty of exciting events coming up too.”

Coughton Court reopens on March 7.
