New £3million theatre looks set to be built at Warwick Hospital

A NEW £3million theatre looks set to be built at Warwick Hospital.

South Warwickshire Foundation Trust – which runs the hospital – has applied to Warwick District Council seeking permission for the building.

If given the green light the three-storey extension will be built on the site of a staff car park at the back of the Accident and Emergency department, Guy Ward and existing theatres.

It would be the seventh theatre for the hospital on Lakin Road and would be accessed through the hospital.

A spokeswoman told the Observer: “The operating theatre development is part of a full extension which includes the new operating theatre and additional space in the acute decisions unit.”

Staff affected by the loss of car parking spaces would park at a nearby business short term, and long term the trust is looking at its options.

These could include a multi-storey car park which the trust said could cost around £2.5million.

The developments are just the latest for the trust, which is bucking the trend for failing NHS services.

Recently it built a new state-of-the-art hospital in Stratford. The £22million building, on the site of the old Arden Street hospital, offers a cancer unit, ophthalmology unit and community wellbeing hub across three floors.

And Warwick Hospital also underwent improvements with a new £1.5million Midwife Led Unit being built on site. It opened earlier this year.
