A BUSINESS rates cut could be the “last chance saloon” for hospitality businesses in Stratford.
MP Manuela Perteghella believes it is “absolutely urgent” for ministers to provide clarity to pubs, hospitality and high street businesses, with rumours circulating that the Government may be planning to reduce planned rises to business rates.
The Stratford MP says that “crucial” high street businesses are on “their last legs” and that this change to business rates is the “final and only chance” for the Government to help save the street.
The Liberal Democrats are also calling for an emergency cut to VAT for the hospitality sector to boost high streets and cut costs for local families.
Dr Perteghella said: “Stratford’s pubs, restaurants and theatres are the heart of our community and a vital part of our local economy. The chancellor must cut VAT on hospitality to give these businesses a fighting chance this winter.
“Hospitality has been hit harder than any other sector by rising costs and the Government’s punitive National Insurance hike. A VAT cut would put money back in people’s pockets, help local businesses keep their staff and protect the places that nourish the local economy.
“The Vineyard in nearby Abbots Salford had to make a very difficult decision to close its doors because of operating costs, leaving the village without a pub.
“One pub closes every day on average in the UK. In rural areas, this can completely change the nature of village life. Without urgent action, we risk losing the venues that hold our communities together.”
She added: “This is the last chance saloon for our hospitality sector. From the cruel jobs tax to high energy bills, so many small businesses in my constituency are on their last legs and need support.
“These businesses are naturally worried sick. The Government must respond by u-turning today and announcing support for all hospitality businesses, including a VAT cut to boost our high streets.
“This is a pivotal moment for ministers, and it is urgent that they provide the clarity that these businesses need. It is their final and only chance.”
