Joan Bakewell shines a new light on Shakespeare - was he a Tory?

RENOWNED journalist, broadcaster and writer, Joan Bakewell will be asking whether Shakespeare was a Tory during a lecture at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford.

She will be taking to the lectern for the annual lecture for The Friends of Shakespeare’s Church, following in the footsteps of distinguished speakers Michael Wood, Martin Bell, Douglas Hurd, Rowan Williams and others.

The talk will take place on Thursday October 9 at 7pm and all proceeds from the lecture will go to support the Friends of Shakespeare’s Church.

Gillian Cawley, chair of The Friends of Shakespeare’s Church said: “We’re delighted to welcome Baroness Bakewell to deliver our annual lecture in the wonderful surroundings of Holy Trinity Church, in which Shakespeare was both baptised and buried and where his remains now lie. She has chosen a deliberately provocative title: ‘Shakespeare and Politics: was he a Tory?’ which promises to be both thoughtful and amusing.”
