THE RIVER Arrow was transformed into a sea of yellow on Saturday (July 5) as 1,140 plastic ducks navigated its gently flowing waters for the Alcester charity duck race.
The spectacle was enjoyed by a large crowd of families and supporters who witnessed their release by the Court Leet’s Low Bailiff Sharon Constable and Mayor of Alcester, Councillor David Henderson at Centenary Field.
Organised by Alcester Bunting and Lighting to raise funds for the Christmas lights and summer bunting, the event celebrated its 20th anniversary with a record number of ducks sold on the day.
Winner of the £200 first prize went to Stacey Carrington from Alcester with duck number 690. Second and third prize were won by ducks 251 and 597 respectively.
This year’s new corporate duck race proved popular with 40 local businesses and organisations taking part. Best decorated duck judged by Councillor Henderson went to ladies’ clothing shop Ciao Bella Chic. Estate agents Sanders and Sanders bagged the top stop in the race itself.
Chair of Alcester Bunting and Lighting Chris Newitt, said: “It went really well with a great turnout of spectators and 350 ducks sold on the day which is really good going. It was also great to see our local businesses get into the spirit by sponsoring a duck which made an extra £1,000.
“Altogether we cleared £3,000 which will go towards replacing the cross street Christmas lights feature that unfortunately failed last December and irreparable.
“We are really grateful to everyone who came out and supported the event which helps keep the town centre look attractive in both winter and summer.”
