Homes needed for Afghan families in Stratford district

PROPERTIES are needed in Stratford district for Afghan families.

Stratford District Council is working with Warwickshire County Council to prepare homes for families arriving here through the Government’s Afghan Resettlement Programme.

Both councils are working with partners to provide a package of support to families for up to three years and are looking for suitable properties for them.

Any landlords with self-contained rental properties in the district, of all sizes, are asked to come forward.

Funding will be available to cover rent during any void period, from the date the property is accepted on the scheme by the Home Office to occupation.

Landlords would be expected to issue families with an Assured Shorthold Tenancy for 12 to 24 months.

Following the NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, the UK government committed to offering sanctuary to a number of Afghan individuals and their families who had worked for the UK government in Afghanistan. This included interpreters for the British army and British Embassy workers.

In addition, the offer was extended to those whose lives were at risk for other reasons, such as those who stood up for democracy, women’s rights, freedom of speech, and rule of law.

SDC has committed to resettling up to 25 families over a five-year period. To date 15 families have resettled in the local area.
