Great Alne retirees grow friendships down on their allotment

GREEN-fingered retirees from Great Alne Park have been growing friendships among the brassicas down on their allotment.

They have their very own plot on the village allotments, which has proved a fertile ground for social interaction, mental health and physical activity, as well as providing home grown fruit and veg for their fellow Inspired Villages residents.

To make sure nothing goes to waste, they have also been donating their surplus vegetables to members of the community. An anonymous “flower fairy” has even been gifting seasonal floral bouquets to boost village moral.

Freshly harvested vegetables are also donated to Maudslay Mart, a volunteer-run community shop.

And when not digging deep on the allotment, the residents have been turning their gardening skills to good use caring for the local churchyard, community orchard and pocket woodland.
