THE QUICK response of firefighters saved the lives of chickens when fire ripped through a South Warwickshire woodland.
Flames could be seen in the night sky coming from the wood between Church Walk and the White Bridge in Wellesbourne on Saturday night.
Crews from the village, together with neigbouring Stratford and Leamington, tackled the blaze.
A spokesman said: “We were met with a fairly large area consisting of trees and a hedgerow well alight. The fire was quickly spreading and was endangering a chicken coup in the adjoining garden.
“Crews were able to secure a water supply from a hydrant and used a hose to quickly gain control and extinguish the fire. Thankfully, no chickens were harmed!”
The woodland was cordoned off to the public following the fire.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been reported.
