Female Warrior returns to Warwickshire

THE STORY of a woman who disguised herself as a man to become a solider will be told in Warwick.

Theatre company Talking Birds will be staging free performances of their new play The Female Warrior at St John’s House in Coten End this May Bank Holiday.

The show tells the remarkable story of Hannah Snell who disguised herself as a man to become a solider in 1745. Hannah joined Guise’s Regiment in Coventry, which went on to become the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, now the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Stephanie Bennett, curator at St John’s House, said: “I’m really excited about this production that brings to life her amazing journey.

“From her birth in Worcester, to when she moved to London where she got married, before disguising herself as a man and joining the Army.”

Derek Nisbet, co-artistic director of Coventry-based Talking Birds said the play had come about from a chance remark.

He told The Observer: “In a conversation with Stephanie, Hannah Snell’s story was mentioned and I thought that it would make a great piece of theatre.

“In many ways it’s an incredibly modern story and speaks to our time. We’ve tried to reflect this and, as part of the research for the performance, have discussed Hannah’s experiences with modern day cadets and servicewomen.”

Free 30 minute performances will take place on Saturday May 27 at 1.30pm, 3.30pm and 7.30pm, and on Monday May 29 at 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

St John’s House is home to The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum (Royal Warwickshire), telling the 300 plus year history of the county regiment. Entry to the museum is free.
