THEY will begin at the beginning when Leamington’s Loft Theatre stages Under Milk Wood.

The company bring Dylan Thomas’ classic play for voices to the stage from March 30 to April 6.

Thomas’ poetic play tunes into the slumbers, dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of the fictional small Welsh fishing town of Llareggub, before they awake to start their day.

Under Milk Wood was commissioned by the BBC as a radio play and was first broadcast in 1954.

It was later adapted for the stage. and to mark the 70th anniversary of this event, Loft Theatre will recreate a radio recording studio on the stage and in 1950s costumes will read the play as if it is being broadcast to the nation.

All sound effects and musical accompaniments will be performed live as the story unfolds in a radio studio setting just as first did seven decades ago.

Director David Fletcher said: “Under Milk Wood is one of the treasures of twentieth-century drama.

“We are captivated first by the dreams of the sleeping inhabitants, and, when dawn breaks, we hear the hullabaloo of breakfast time, the start of school, and the working day. We follow these fascinating locals through the day until night falls and they gather in the Sailors Arms.”
