Campaigners: cuts threatening education of vulnerable children

CAMPAIGNERS say the education of vulnerable young people is under threat due to government spending cuts.

Parents, teachers, carers and pupils have teamed up to form Warwickshire Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) National Crisis.

The group says across the county vulnerable learners are receiving less support due to austerity measures which are causing issues with safeguarding and equal opportunities.

Campaigners are holding a public meeting at Leamington Town Hall on Thursday March 7 at 7pm where those with concerns can discuss the issues surrounding local care.

A spokesman said: “This reduction in quality and quantity of provision is posing real safeguarding and equal opportunities issues for some of Warwickshire’s school population and is part of the same pattern of reducing provision since 2008 that is now all too obvious across the nation as a whole.

“The meeting is part of a concerted programme of pressure on local and national government to end the shameful decline in SEND provision.

“It has the backing of education experts, SEND National Crisis members, local MP Matt Western and education workers.”

The group is also planning to heighten the public’s awareness of its plight and is looking to hold a protest march in Leamington later this year.

But Warwickshire County Council says it has a strategy to support those with special educational needs which was developed with families.

A spokeswoman told the Observer: “Warwickshire County Council is extremely aware of SEND issues and its strategy to support children with SEND was co-produced alongside parents and carers to ensure that their voices were heard and that the strategy addressed their needs.

“We continue to work closely with parents and carers as well as local area schools, colleges and other settings to support children and young people with SEND.”
