Lidi and Aldi Ranked Top Supermarkets To Buy Your Easter Lunch

Stratford Editorial 28th Mar, 2024   0

Did you know that your Easter lunch could cost you as little as £15.52? That’s right! If you purchased all your Easter lunch favourites from Lidl, you could cut your spending by half compared to shopping at Morrisons.

With Easter Sunday fast approaching, Finance Experts at Cashfloat sought to uncover which UK supermarket offers the most affordable options for purchasing Easter lunch essentials in 2024 – and the results are in!

What exactly does an Easter lunch include?

Before we get into the cheapest supermarkets to buy your Easter lunch ingredients, let’s first cover what a typical Easter lunch includes. Typically speaking, a traditional Easter lunch consists of roast lamb with sides such as roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and a selection of vegetables. For this study, we compared the cost of popular roasted vegetables including carrots, tender stem broccoli, peas, and parsnips. Of course, no lamb roast is complete without gravy and mint sauce, so we’ve also identified the cheapest supermarket offering for each of these favourites, too.

First Place – Lidl

Lidl ranked the most budget-friendly option for Easter Sunday lunch ingredients in 2024, totalling just £15.52. However, the price of their roast potatoes are the same as those at Aldi, as well as their carrots and parsnips being some of the cheapest available. So, regardless of whether you’re planning to eat in this Easter Sunday, there’s opportunity to save on your vegetables year-round!

Second Place – Aldi

Aldi offers a similar Easter lunch at a slightly higher price of £18.82 (or £3.30 more compared to Lidl). However, when it comes to Sunday lunch essentials such as Yorkshire puddings, Aldi came in top with the most budget-friendly option priced a 46p per bag. Morrisons offers the highest cost per bag, priced at an eyewatering £2.49.

Third Place – Asda

Asda ranked above Tesco, securing the third spot among the best supermarkets for purchasing Easter lunch ingredients, averaging at £23.63 (or 41p less compared to Tesco). However, the total cost of their Easter Sunday lunch still totalled £8.11 more than Lidl and £4.81 more than Aldi or the cost of a dessert!

Where not to buy your Easter lunch

Surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly for avid supermarket shoppers, Morrisons ranked the costliest supermarket to purchase your easter lunch, totalling approximately £33.74 which is double the cost of Lidl and £15 more compared to Aldi. That includes the same ingredients including supermarket-brand mint sauce costing 72p.

Waitrose, Iceland, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and M&S all came in under the cost of Morrisons’ Easter lunch, costing £27.63, £32.87, £24.04, and £32.20 respectively.

The Verdict

With Easter Sunday fast approaching, now is the time to consider the most cost-effective supermarket to purchase your traditional Easter Sunday lunch ingredients. Whether you decide to compare the total cost of the meal by different popular UK supermarkets or select each ingredient by price, you can find a wallet-friendly solution that is bound to make your family and friends smile.
