‘Help us help our four-legged friends through COVID-19 crisis’, say Birmingham Dogs Home

PLEASE DON’T FORGET US – That’s the message from our four-legged friends at Birmingham Dogs Home during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Founded in 1892 with ‘Home for Lost and Starving Dogs’ proudly displayed above its doors, Birmingham Dogs Home has been caring for abandoned, abused and homeless dogs in our region for over 125 years.

But due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, they now need your help more than ever. Currently all four-legged residents are on lockdown with none up for adoption as Government restrictions prevent visits and adoption home checks. However, the staff are busier than ever and more and more furry friends are arriving at the home almost daily.

One such new arrival was an emaciated Lurcher found on March 25th wandering around Cannock Chase. Weighing only 15kg on arrival (a normal weight for a Lurcher is 27-30kg), she was in in a lot of pain and suffering deep wounds.

Upon arrival at Birmingham Dogs Home, she was seen by a vet who cleaned her wounds but she may still require surgery once she is strong enough to undergo a general anaesthetic.

Her carer told us: “We’ve named her Florence – in tribute to the NHS and she is such a very kind soul. But you can just see her pain through her eyes.

“We’ve got her on medication now to help with that and also for her infections. She’s also being fed five small meals a day due to the size of her stomach. Gradually we will build her up to be able to accept larger meals… but these things take time.

“It’s very lucky she got to us in time. The main thing is she’s safe now, getting the treatment she needs and we’re excited to see her progress.”

Despite the Coronavirus crisis, the Birmingham Dogs Home team members are delivering key work in caring for their four-legged friends behind closed doors. It costs over £2 million each year to run their centres and without government funding they are entirely reliant upon the general public.

Many people choose to make a gift to Birmingham Dogs Home in their wills after remembering their loved ones.  A small gift makes a huge difference to this well loved charity which works in communities across the West Midlands, Warwickshire and as far as South Staffordshire.

Around two thirds of the home’s income comes from gifts included in people’s wills.

However, personal tributes can also include memorial bricks and plaques. Their ‘Buy a Brick’ program offers supporters their name and special message featured on a wall at the Birmingham Dogs Home Centres.

Losing a loved one is so difficult but this can be a wonderful way to honour their life and contribution to their community, family and pets by making a donation in their memory.

But it’s also kind donations like these that help one of our region’s oldest and best loved charities survive at this difficult time as they help all their four legged residents have happier futures.
