A STOPPAGE-TIME defeat dealt a crushing blow to Coventry United Ladies’ Championship survival hopes, as the Red and Greens sank to the bottom of the table.

Georgia Timms’ 93rd-minute winner for visitors Lewes edged a 1-0 scoreline at Butts Park Arena, dealing a tenth defeat of the season to Jay Bradford’s side.

It appeared that United were well set for a well-earned point and first clean sheet this term, not least because of goalkeeper Sue Wood’s repeated heroics between the sticks to keep the away side at bay.

Coventry did have chances of their own, notably being denied when Amber Hughes’ goal-bound drive was tipped onto the bar by Tatiana Saunders, while Fran Orthodoxu and Beth Merrick also went close.

But ultimately Timms’ late stab into the hosts’ net settled it, with another tough task away to fourth-placed Liverpool awaiting United on Sunday.
