Return to 'normaility' will not be swift says Stratford District Council leader

STRATFORD is starting the return to ‘normality’ but it will not be swift says council leader Tony Jefferson.

The Government has set out its plan to help get the country back on its feet as quickly as possible – to safeguard livelihoods but also keep people safe and protect our NHS.

With Shakespeare’s home town a major tourist hotspot, Stratford District Council has issued information for visitors as the lockdown is lifted.

The public open spaces at the Recreation Ground and Bancroft Gardens remain open and people are advised to practise social distancing from other people outside their household. The Recreation Ground play area and outdoor gym equipment remain closed as per current Government guidance.

District council-run car parks are open and charges apply.

The council is also looking into the possibility of opening the public toilets safely at the Recreation Ground, in line with Government guidance and with social distancing measures in place by the weekend. All other public toilets in the town centre and across the district remain closed.

Would-be visitors are also reminded the majority of non-essential retail and amenities in the town centre remain closed at this time.

Council leader Tony Jefferson said: “The return to whatever ‘normality’ post Covid-19 looks like will not be swift.

“We are taking things in small steps as we have no clarity on how people are going to react. There are, obviously, some very careful balances that need to be struck and we will be learning constantly and revising our approach as appropriate.”
