A VIGIL was held in Stratford following the destruction caused to the environment in the Australian bushfires.
Around 30 people attended the event, organised by Stratford’s Extinction Rebellion branch, in Bancroft Gardens.
Participants wore black arm bands and held candles as a sign of grief and respect for the victims, both human and animal, who lost lives, homes and habitats to the raging fires.
Stratford’s Green Party candidate Dave Passingham was among those paying tribute.
He said: “I supported the vigil because it is important to highlight the terrible destruction to the environment in Australia. Climate-related disasters like this are likely to happen all over the world including Britain.”
The fires blazing across the south and east coasts have claimed the lives of 29 people and are said to have killed over a billion animals, with more than 16 million acres of land destroyed.
