A POLICE probe is taking place into officers’ contact with a man before he was found dead in the River Avon.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating officers who were involved with 26-year-old Cameron Whelan before he died.
Cameron, from Moseley in Birmingham, was believed to have entered the water on Friday (May 25) following an assault outside McDonald’s on Bridge Street at around 9.30pm.
Officers were called and followed him to the river where he was then seen to enter the water.
His body was found by dive teams on Tuesday (May 29) following a major search operation.
A spokesman from the IOPC told the Observer: “We are investigating prior police contact with Cameron Whelan who was found dead in the River Avon.
“Our investigation follows a mandatory referral from Warwickshire Police and is at a very early stage. We have made contact with Mr Whelan’s family to explain our involvement.”
In a statement Cameron’s family said: “Cameron will be highly missed, he was loved by everyone who knew him.”
