Botham strides to top title

FULREADY rider Adam Botham won the National 1.30m Open Championship at the British Showjumping National Championships, held at the NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

Sunday’s final class of the day in Championship Arena 2 saw 60 riders come forward for the National 1.30m Open Championship.

There were just seven riders clear who went through to the jump-off and it was Botham, riding nine-year-old Dakota, who clinched first place to take the spoils, winning in a time of 35.45 seconds.

Botham took over the ride of Dakota from Jake Saywell in May after the mare had won at the Championships with Saywell in both the 1.20m and 1.30m Senior Open classes.

Botham said: “This class was a step down for Dakota and was mainly used to gain her confidence. She is a very feisty mare and she likes to be in control.

“I really liked the jump-off. It played into Dakota’s hands as she was able to flow throughout the course.”
