Inspirational Agnes shines in Switzerland

IT WAS a case of another week, another race and another win for Stratford Athletic Club’s Agnes McTighe, writes David Jones.

McTighe raced in the Corrida Bulloise road race in her native Switzerland on Saturday in the town of Bulle, Fribourg, and won in 5:35, which was 41 seconds ahead of second place.

There were 51 under 16 girls in the race, which was a short, sharp contest over 1,750m.

In heavy rain, McTighe went off very quickly and opened up a big lead early on. Even though she was leading, she put in some surges during the race to practice race tactics.

She had enjoyed a good training week beforehand and was just using this race as a training run.

When her coach Paul Hawkins spoke to her after the victory she told him that, when she trained, it was minus 16 centigrade with 15cm of snow on top of ice, so there is absolutely no doubting her dedication.

As the Observer went to press McTighe was turning her attentions to a seniors cross country race over 5,000m to get some decent competition.
