THE DRIVER of this car somehow managed to escape serious injury.

A man in his 40s is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel while traveling on the M40 near Gaydon and crashed into a highways maintenance vehicle on the hard shoulder.

The crash happened around 4.30pm on Wednesday and the driver was treated for head and facial injuries by paramedics.

A West Midlands Amubulance spokesperson said: “Considering the damage to the vehicle and the nature of the incident the man was extremely fortunate not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries in the crash.

“The highways maintenance vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the crash. Its crew were working near to the vehicle off the main carriageway.”

The man was airlifted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further treatment.
