BOWLS - Warwickshire Women begin Middle England League season with win

WARWICKSHIRE Women’s Bowling Association began the Middle England League season with a hard fought 112-93 win against Northamptonshire in challenging conditions at Southam.

The game was played in cold and extremely blustery conditions as Janice White with Jenny Wickens (both RLS), Lynne Innes (Stratford) and Anna Molony (Avenue Leamington) had the highest winning rink.

And although the opposition attempted a fightback, the home team held on to take a 24-9 victory.

Heather Mills (Grange Ladies) with Dawn Horne (RLS), Linda Linney (Stratford) and Yvonne Bromfield (Rugby Thornfield) were just a shot adrift of the highest winning rink as a strong start saw them claim a 24-10 success.

And Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) with Anita Cowdrill (RLS), Pat Gagg (Lillington) and Trish Jarvis (Wolvey) produced a remarkable comeback to win their game.

A slow start saw them trails 10-4 at the 10th end only for 11 shots on the 12th and 13th ends to make all the difference as they pulled ahead to eventually triumph 23-19.

There was also a one-shot victory for Yvonne Pick (Welford) with Margaret Grosvenor (Lillington), Elaine Taylor (Stoke) and Chris Cooke (Southam) in an evenly-matched contest.

The game was all square at eight-all at the ninth end and they just managed to pull ahead in the last few ends to win 19-18.

Jenny Corn with Pippa Mace (both Lillington), Ros Taylor (Avenue Coventry) and Aleen Shuttleworth (Stoke) were level at six-all after 10 ends and the game continued in that vein to finish in a 14-14 draw.

Warwickshire had just one losing team as Debbie Bloxham (Stratford) with Velisa Brown (Southam), Joy Cooke (Sherwood Park) and Di Medhurst (Nuneaton) were beaten 23-8.

County President, Debbie Bloxham was delighted to present County Badges to Anita Cowdrill (RLS), Anna Molony (Avenue Leamington) and Jenny Wickens (RLS).
