Age category wins galore for Stratford runners

Stratford Editorial 9th Jun, 2020   0

STRATFORD Athletic Club runners enjoyed huge success in the Warwickshire Road Race League (WRRL) Virtual 5k.

This year’s usual WRRL competition has, like all athletic competitions, been decimated due to the pandemic, but this did not deter organisers from staging a virtual 5k race in May.

Some 341 competitors took part, including 59 from Stratford Athletic Club.

This format also allows athletes in junior age groups the chance to compete against their elders. From a SAC point of view, this proved hugely successful.

In the women’s race, which was won by Megan McDonald from Leamington in a time of 17.37, second place went to Stratford’s Georgie Campbell in a time of 18.00, enabling her to win the U17W age category by almost two minutes.

Other age category wins for Stratford in the ladies’ races were W55 Kate Wright in 12th place with a time of 20.24, U13G Tessa Parkin in 19th place in 21.06 and W65 Ruth Calderbank in 29.44.

The Stratford women’s A team finished in third place overall out of four teams, with their B team in eighth place, C team 14th, D team 26th and E team in 39th. The ladies’ Masters A team finished in second place.

In the men’s race, 41 of the 203 competitors were from Stratford and they achieved a host of age category wins.

First male home for the club was U15B Alex Adams in eighth place overall with a time of 16.48. Stratford runners occupied the first four places in the U15B category, with Taylor Stubbins (19.02) second in the category and Caleb Spriggs (19.30) and Ben Stockill (21.10) third and fourth respectively.

Matt Burdus-Cook topped the M40 category, finishing in tenth place overall with a time of 16.54 – a mere six seconds behind Adams. Just four seconds later was Josh Newman in 12th place (16.58).

Other age category winners for Stratford were: U11B Sam Plumb (22.51), U13B Max Verstraeten (21.16), U17M Ned Campbell (20.19), M45 Andrew Cox (18.23), M50 Wayne Vickers (18.49), M55 Richard Dobedoe (18.31), M75 Phil Brennan (24.27).

Stratford’s male A team were just pipped to first place by Spa Striders who finished on 88 points against Stratford’s 96. Their B team were in seventh place, C team tenth, D team 13th, E team 17th, F team 25th and G team 36th out of 43 teams who competed.

In the masters team category, Stratford were triumphant – finishing in first place with their B team in fourth, C team tenth, D team 17th and E team 34th.
