Warwickshire county chiefs remind residents of Stoptober benefits

Editorial Correspondent 1st Oct, 2020 Updated: 1st Oct, 2020

AS STOPTOBER arrives county chiefs are reminding residents of the benefits of quitting smoking.

The October campaign encourages people to quit smoking for 28 days. Research has found people who manage the whole month are five times more likely to quit smoking in the long term.

Cigarettes contain tobacco, an addictive substance which, along with thousands of other chemicals, causing harm to the smoker and those around them.

Evidence also suggests smokers can experience more severe covid-19 symptoms than non-smokers, making now a great time to quit.

There are a range of support services across Warwickshire to help quitters on their journey.

Pregnant women and families also have access to specialist advisors known as the Quit4Baby team.

The dedicated team can provide free and confidential support for as long it’s needed as well as free access to nicotine replacement therapy. This includes patches, mouth sprays, inhalators and gum to help cope with cravings.

Councillor Les Caborn, portfolio holder for adult social care and health said: “Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, not only can it help you reduce your risk of a heart disease but it can also improve your lung function. This is especially important, given the challenges of covid-19. Whether you are healthy now or already unwell from smoking, stopping smoking can reduce your risk of severe covid-19 symptoms, transform your life and save your pocket.

“We are committed to supporting our residents to help them quit smoking, and dedicated advice and information can be accessed through our website or through a smoking advisor.”
