The Choir of Clare College Cambridge perform at Warwick Choral Festival

Stratford Editorial 3rd Jul, 2022   0

THE CHOIR of Clare College, Cambridge will perform in Warwick for the first time on Tuesday (July 5).

The concert starting at 7.30pm is in St Mary’s Church and is part of the first Warwick Choral Festival.

The internationally-acclaimed choir, conducted by Graham Ross, has previously given three concerts put on by Leamington Music in churches in Leamington.

Mr Ross has devised a programme, A Vaughan Williams Legacy, especially for Warwick and it continues Leamington Music’s celebration during 2022 of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

Vaughan Williams’s Mass in G and three other works by him are complemented by music which ranges from the opening work by Robert Wylkynson, written around 1500, to O Western Wind…An anniversary by Sarah Cattley, born in 1995.

Other composers represented include Holst, Howells, Parry, Stanford and the Master of the Queen’s Music, Judith Weir.

There are two composers with Leamington connections in the programme. William Denis Browne was born there in 1888, was a student at Clare College and was killed at Gallipoli in 1915. Howard Skempton has lived in Leamington for over 30 years and celebrates his 75th birthday later this year.

There are also two Warwick connections among the members of the thirty-strong Choir. These are the daughters of Katherine Dienes who was Director of Music at St Mary’s Church from 2002 to 2008 and Mark Turner who was head of Warwick Prep School.
