A TEENAGER from Stratford has been named Student of the Year at Moreton Morrell College.

Todd North won the overall prize at the college as well as the Land-Based Studies Student of the Year.

The 17-year-old is on the autism spectrum and has overcome associated challenges to successfully complete his Level One Diploma in Land-Based Studies and be recognised by the college with both awards.

He is now hoping to progress to a Level Two Diploma in Agriculture at Moreton Morrell College, part of college group WCG (formerly Warwickshire College Group), as he looks forward to a career in estate management.

Todd said: “I was quite surprised and pleased to win the awards. It’s made me and my family quite proud.

“I had done a Level One Diploma in Animal Care and then moved on to Land-Based Studies. The course was quite practical so you could get your hands dirty and experience things that you are learning about which was great. I even learnt to drive a tractor!

“The tutors were very helpful and made the lessons interesting. I am hoping to go on to a Level Two Diploma in Agriculture and in the future, would like to manage an estate.”

Todd and his mum Zena, who used to live in Coventry, travelled all over the country to find the right college and decided to move to Stratford to be closer to Moreton Morrell College.

Zena said: “We visited colleges all over the country and were impressed with the support and facilities at Moreton Morrell College which were out of this world. We decided to make the move and everything fell into place.

“Todd has had quite a lot of challenges and so for him to overcome them and achieve these awards is amazing. He is doing really well and the support he has had from the college has been excellent.”

Michael Fairclough, head of department at Moreton Morrell College, added: “Todd is a super member of the Level One group. He works well with his peers during both practical and theory lessons, and is always keen to contribute to class discussions.

“Todd is very deserving of the Student of the Year Award. He has embraced every opportunity to learn and develop his skills and knowledge with a positive and cheerful outlook.” To find out more about studying at Moreton Morrell College visit www.wcg.ac.uk/study
