Shipston-on-Sea? Proposals to build Britain's 'shortest pier' revealed

TOWNSPEOPLE in Shipston could soon be left wondering whether they live on Stour or on sea.

Proposals are set to be unveiled to build possibly Britain’s ‘shortest pier’ in the town – a £60,000 viewing platform over the River Stour on Mill Street.

It would be situated next to the historic Shipston Bridge, believed to have been built in the 1600s, and around 80 miles from the nearest stretch of coastline.

Town councillors say it would give residents and visitors a clearer view of the river and wildlife in the water and on the banks.

Designs – which are currently being drawn up – will see work done to each side of the 17th century bridge, including picnic benches, a child’s play tunnel made out of willow, information boards, a bug hotel and raised flower beds.

But other than saying it could be the shortest pier, the exact measurements have yet to be revealed.

Original plans were for a wooden footbridge to be built alongside the existing bridge but councillors say this is no longer viable and a platform was the best option.

A public consultation will be held on Friday and Saturday August 2 and 3 at New Clark House where townspeople can find out more about the project and visit the site.

Shipston deputy mayor Sheelagh Saunders said: “This will be perhaps Britain’s shortest pier.

“We are really excited about the plans to make the most of the river at Shipston Bridge.

“It’s really important our community is involved in the next steps and has the opportunity to make this a space we will all want to use.

“We hope to see as many of you at the open day as possible and look forward to hearing your views.”
