Shakespeare helps oil protesters highlight climate concerns in Stratford

Stratford Editorial 30th May, 2023 Updated: 30th May, 2023   0

JUST Stop Oil protesters used Shakespeare to help voice their climate concerns when they marched through Stratford on Saturday.

Traffic was delayed as the small group made their way to the town centre, accompanied by police, along Alcester Road, Arden Street, Greenhill Street, Birmingham Road and Bridge Street.

Standing on the pavement near the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, one of the protesters said: “Shakespeare wrote a play called “Much Ado About Nothing”.  Some people think that the climate crisis is much ado about nothing, but it isn’t.  It’s about a hell of a lot.”

“Shakespeare also wrote “The Tempest”. Recently a cyclone hit the area where there are Rohingya refugees. Climate change will lead to many more tempests.”

Just Stop Oil is holding a talk on Wednesday (May 31), from 7pm to 9pm, at the Friends’ Meeting house in Stratford.
