THE SECRET to a long life is a happy marriage.

So says Stratford centenarian Harry Tanfield, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at his Tiddington Court home.

Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, the father-of-two attended grammar school before branching out into the furniture trade, which is where he spent his entire working life.

He was also a Registered Clerk for six years in the army with the RASC and served in the Middle East and Italy as part of the Special Operations team.

In 1948, the then 32-year-old met and married Margaret with whom he went on to have two children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

After receiving his letter from the Queen, Harry said he believed he had reached his 100th year thanks to living a healthy and happy life with Margaret.

The pair often enjoy trips out together and Harry insists he is still very much in the driving seat – of his car at least.
