ALAN Ayckbourn’s comedy Improbable Fiction is next up for Second Thoughts at The Bear Pit in Stratford, playing from March 2 to 5.
It is set in the small country town of Pendon at a meeting of the local writers’ circle. It’s their scheduled monthly meeting, but as it’s nearly Christmas attendance is down a bit.
And those who do manage to get to chairman Arnold’s house are down a bit, too – the dreaded writer’s block.
They each reveal their progress – or rather, embarrassing lack of it – in their chosen literary genres.
As a desperate measure Arnold proposes they collaborate on a story which combines all their styles.
Cuethunderclap, power cuts and a crazy intertwining of Victorian melodrama, 1920s whodunnit and science fiction.
Central to this vortex of quick-change and highly improbable plotting is Arnold’s elderly – and unseen – mother.
