IT ALL kicked off as school football teams came face to face for the finals of Stratford District Council’s 6-a-side tournament.

More than 40 primary schools and almost 550 youngsters had taken part in regional tournaments in Southam, Shipston, Studley, and Stratford with both the winners and runners-up progressing to the final on Stratford Recreation Ground.

Teams from Southam, Welford, St Mary’s in Studley, Southam St James, Wootton Wawen, and Ilmington were knocked out before the boys’ final saw Shipston edge a tight game 1-0 over Thomas Jolyffe after both teams had been undefeated in their group matches.

The girls’ final comprised a round-robin format and was also a tense affair.

The identity of the winning school was in doubt until the final match with Barford St Peter’s emerging triumphant against The Willows.

Other schools to take part in the tournament were Temple Grafton, Shipston and Southam St James.

Trophies and medals were presented to the winners and runners-up by councillor Mike Brain.

A district council spokeswoman said: “The tournament was superbly officiated by sports leaders from Stratford School and there was also assistance from Adam Mundy of Everyone Active.

“The other volunteers who helped the tournaments to be successful did a great job and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved.”
