A SAUSAGE sizzle raised more than £2,000 to support the Australian bushfires disaster recovery mission.

Aussie expats Katherine Attreed and Tina Smith hosted the charity event at Warwick Market selling meat and vegetarian sausages and hotdogs with all money raised going to their chosen charities – The Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery and WIRES Wildlife Rescue.

Katherine said: “The response on the day was incredible. We were really busy all day as people had heard about the fundraiser and come specifically to buy a sausage and donate. So many people said they had seen the devastating fires and wanted to do something to help.

“We also had some last-minute donations. More sausage from Steve Crowe & Son in Kenilworth to add to the ones we received from Aubrey Allen, Rowleys & Mel Broome & Son. We also had bread donated by the Bakers Dozen in Kenilworth to add to the rolls and bread we received from Thirteen Bakers, bread&co and Tesco Warwick, as well as Brownies from Bluebasil in Leamington and an Aussie named Carolyn who made some Anzac biscuits.

And there was special thank you for Ben Rushforth from Ben’s Biltong who provided the hot plate and gave up his time to cook all day.

The devastating bushfires have destroyed more than 10 million hectares of land and 2,600 homes, killing 28 people and a billion animals including around a third of the entire koala population.
