NEED a throne in a hurry? – then look no further than the RSC props department.

The company’s collection of some 18,500 props is stored in a warehouse on Timothy Bridge Road in Stratford, where they are are re-purposed, reused in rehearsals or hired out.

The items are either, bought, adapted or made from scratch by the in-house team.

Props range from the everyday such as kitchen sinks and umbrellas to manacles and severed heads.

The warehouse boasts an extensive range of some 1,000 chairs including 83 stools, 36 thrones and nine wheelchairs, and enough books to keep the entire RST audience entertained in the interval.

Staff estimate the prop-laden shelves would span from Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Henley Street to the RST in Waterside.

The props warehouse, which recently held an open day, can be visited during the week by appointment.
