Protestors make a stand against HS2 developers after 400-year-old oak tree felled

PROTESTORS have made a stand against HS2 developers.

Contractors worked along Welsh Road near Bascote on Wednesday and Thursday (January 22 and 23), which involved cutting down hedgerows and trees – including a 400-year-old oak.

But in a bid to stop work taking place, campaigners headed to the site and blocked efforts of contractors and stood in front of machinery.

A spokeswoman for Save Cubbington Woods said it came days after a letter was sent to HS2 calling for no irreversible works to be done until the results of government’s official review into the line were known.

She told the Observer: “A small group of woodland protectors stood in front of machinery to stop damage being done.

“We are very sad and disappointed the following day contractors were back again, felling trees and ripping out hedges – at this time of year the hedges are sheltering all sorts of birds and wildlife – including the great crested newts – which are known to be in this area.”

Protestors against the controversial line have been camping out in Cubbington and Crackley Woods for months in a bid to stop contractors from working on the site.

HS2 has been contacted for comment.
